SAFE — safer shelters, designed with children
A DAPHNE project that trained shelter staff and built, together with unaccompanied teenagers, a child-friendly reporting mechanism.
SAFE (Support and Awareness for Future Empowerment) is a child-centred initiative protecting unaccompanied refugee children aged 10–18 living in accommodation facilities across Greece. The aim: to turn shelters into inclusive, supportive environments where children live in safety and dignity.
The project trained shelter staff and management to recognise and prevent violence, and built an accessible, child-friendly mechanism for reporting concerns and incidents. Children were not just beneficiaries: through focus groups and creative workshops they co-designed the tools and the awareness campaigns.
The reporting mechanism stays live for two years beyond the project, with a view to adoption by the Greek state, and the training materials are available to shelters and communities.
